When you think of skin care, routines with dozens of products often come to mind. But the backbone of a good routine comes down to three steps: cleanse, moisturize, protect. Once you get these three right, you can comfortably layer serums and targeted treatments on top. Below, we explain what each step does, how to choose products, and how to build a morning/evening routine.
Step 1: Cleansing
Cleansing removes the buildup of dirt, excess oil, sunscreen, and makeup residue throughout the day, helping the products that follow absorb better into the skin. In the morning, one gentle cleanse is enough. At night, if you wore makeup and sunscreen, a double cleanse (first a makeup remover, then a facial cleanser) is more effective.
- Dry or sensitive skin: gentle-foaming, soap-free, soothing cleansers.
- Oily and acne-prone skin: clarifying cleansers with salicylic acid or clay that help purify pores.
- Normal and combination skin: gel or foaming cleansers for daily use that do not disrupt the skin's moisture balance.
After cleansing, a toner refreshes the skin and preps it for moisturizer. For options, you can browse the Cleansing / Toner category.
Step 2: Moisturizing
Moisturizer supports the skin barrier and slows moisture loss. Oily skin also needs moisturizer; the difference is in the texture.
- Dry skin: richer creams with hyaluronic acid, ceramides, and nourishing oils.
- Oily and combination skin: water-based, gel-textured, fast-absorbing moisturizers.
- Sensitive skin: fragrance-free, soothing, minimal formulas.
If you use a serum, it goes before moisturizer: cleanse, toner, serum, moisturizer. To choose based on your goals, check out the Moisturizers and Serums categories.
Step 3: Protection
Daily sunscreen is the most effective way to help prevent visible signs of skin aging and dark spots; even on cloudy days and indoors by a window, we are exposed to UV rays. As the last step of your morning routine, apply a sufficient amount over moisturizer to the face and neck. If you will be outdoors for a long time, it should be reapplied during the day.
- Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) are generally better tolerated by sensitive skin.
- Moisturizer + SPF combinations reduce a morning routine to a single step.
- Lips are affected by the sun too; lip care with SPF can be added to your routine.

Sample Routine
Morning: gentle cleanser → toner (optional) → serum (like vitamin C) → moisturizer → sunscreen.
Evening: makeup removal (if needed) → facial cleanser → toner → targeted serum (retinol or retinal, a few nights a week) → moisturizer.
When adding a new active, introduce one product at a time and observe how your skin responds for a few weeks. If you want to start retinol, our article What is retinol, and how do you use it? will guide you.
Common Mistakes
- Cleansing until the skin feels "squeaky clean": this weakens the barrier and can lead to dryness and increased oiliness.
- Skipping moisturizer for oily skin.
- Using sunscreen only in summer.
- Starting too many actives at once; it makes it harder to identify what is causing irritation.
